SYMPTOMS

After you try to use Microsoft Windows Update or Microsoft Update to update a device driver, you may be unable to use the device if the update was not completed successfully.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when a failure occurs after the updated driver files have been copied, and while The Setup Program Is writing updated information to the Registry. If the driver update does not work at this point of the Setup process, the original driver is removed, but the updated driver may not be installed.

Note Typically, if Windows Update or Microsoft Update driver installation does not work, the original driver remains installed and continues to function correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restore the driver:

  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager in the left pane.
  2. Right-click the device that you tried to update the driver for, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Driver tab, and then click Rollback.
