SYMPTOMS

When you try to download assemblies in an application that was built by using the Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1, the application may appear to stop responding (hang). When this problem occurs, you do not receive an error message.

Note Although this problem was first noticed while using a Microsoft ASP.NET application, this problem is not specific to ASP.NET.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a timing issue exists when a .NET Framework application releases and acquires some internal locks.

RESOLUTION

Software update information

A supported software update is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This software update may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework 1.1 service pack that contains this software update.
