SYMPTOMS
An e-mail message that contains an attachment that must be scanned by your antivirus software may not be scanned before the e-mail message and the attachment are sent to the information store. This problem occurs on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the content type of the attachment body part is changed to message\rfc822.
The attachment of different file types to an e-mail message requires the use of the MIME protocol. The MIME protocol defines different parts of the e-mail message and includes header fields that label the content of the fields. Depending on the content type of the attachment body part, the message is sent for antivirus scanning.
The content type may be changed if the MIME-based e-mail message is malformed. If the e-mail message is malformed, the e-mail message may not be recognized as a file that must be scanned by your antivirus program. Because the e-mail message is not scanned, a file that may be infected with a virus may be sent to the information store.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the August 2004 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 update rollup.
