SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to complete a remote Microsoft Windows installation on a Hewlett Packard (HP) Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) 1.10-compliant computer, such as the Superdome (Orca), the rx7620 (Eiger), or the rx8620 (Olympia)-based computers. After you select the operating system from the OS Chooser menu to start the Setupldr program, you may receive the following error message:

The network boot card in your computer has an older version of ROM and cannot be used to remotely install Windows. Contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for information about upgrading the ROM. Setup cannot continue.

Press any key to exit.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if Setupldr tries to obtain an EFI device input/output (I/O) interface to perform a PCI configuration space read operation to gather data about the network adapter. On HP EFI 1.10-compliant computers, this operation does not work because such computers no longer support the use of the Device I/O protocol. Instead, they currently support the PCI I/O protocol. Setupldr should try to use PCI I/O protocol on computers that support the PCI I/O protocol when Setupldr uses EFI services to complete configuration space read operations.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

In this hotfix, Microsoft modified Setupldr. Therefore, the code to read PCI configuration space to obtain network adapter information uses only uses Device I/O protocol if the computer does not support the PCI I/O protocol.
