SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows Server 2003, when you use Terminal Server License Server Activation Wizard to activate a Terminal Services license server by telephone, you may find that you cannot use the product ID that appears on the License Server Activation page of the wizard to complete the activation of the license server. The product ID that is generated by the wizard does not work.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when Terminal Server License Server Activation Wizard incorrectly processes the product ID.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

After you obtain the hotfix that is described in this article, you must apply the hotfix to the license server when you install Terminal Server Licensing. If Terminal Server Licensing is already installed on the server, you have to remove Terminal Server Licensing and then reinstall Terminal Server Licensing by using the version of the Lserver.exe file that is included in the hotfix. To apply the hotfix that is described in this article to the server, follow these steps:

  1. Remove Terminal Server Licensing if Terminal Server Licensing is installed. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
    2. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Add/Remove Windows Components.

      Windows Components Wizard starts.
    3. In the Components list, click to clear the Terminal Server Licensing check box, click Next, and then click Finish.
    4. Restart the server.
  2. Rename the Lserver.exe file that is included in the hotfix that is described in this article to Lserver.ex_.
  3. Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD in the CD-ROM drive on your computer. Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert the CD to prevent it from starting automatically.
  4. Create a new folder that is named I386, and then copy the files that are contained in the I386 folder of the Windows Server 2003 CD to the new I386 folder that you created.
  5. Copy the Lserver.ex_ file that you renamed in step 2 to the I386 folder that you created earlier in step 4, and then click Yes when you are prompted to replace the existing Lserver.exe file in that folder.
  6. Remove the Windows Server 2003 CD from the CD-ROM drive.
  7. Install Terminal Server Licensing. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
    2. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Add/Remove Windows Components.

      Windows Components Wizard starts.
    3. In the Components list, click to select the Terminal Server Licensing check box, and then click Next.
    4. On the Terminal Server Licensing Setup page, specify the role of the license server and the location of the license server database, and then click Next.
    5. In the Insert Disk dialog box, click OK.

      Note Make sure that the Windows Server 2003 CD is not inserted in the CD-ROM drive on the computer.
    6. In the Files Needed dialog box, click Browse.
    7. In the Locate File dialog box, locate the I386 folder that you created in step 4, click Open, and then click OK.
    8. Click Finish.
