  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services

BUG #: 14136 (Plato7x)

SYMPTOMS

If you incrementally update a non-changing dimension, and you have deleted members from the dimension's base table, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services crashes.

CAUSE

Analysis Services crashes because an inconsistency exists between the virtual dimension and the master dimension where the virtual dimension is based. The master dimension is not a changing dimension so the members that were deleted from the base table are not removed from the master dimension. However, because the virtual dimension is a changing dimension, the deleted members are removed from the virtual dimension.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.

MORE INFORMATION

As described in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Books Online, non-changing dimensions should be fully reprocessed when members are deleted. This problem does not occur is the master dimension is fully processed. After you apply the hotfix in this article, you receive an error message when Analysis Services incrementally updates the virtual dimension and if there is a missing member in the master dimension. The only way to correct this problem is to fully process the dimension.
