SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe) may unexpectedly stop responding (hang), and an access violation (0xc0000005) may occur in the EcDSDNFromSz function.

If the correct symbols are installed on the server, the Dr. Watson log (Drwtsn32.log) or the corresponding User.dmp file may contain a call stack that is similar to the following:

Additionally, event ID messages that are similar to the following are logged in the application event log:
Event ID: 4097
Source: Dr. Watson
Description:
The application, exe\store.dbg, generated an application error. The error occurred on date @ time. The exception generated was c0000005 at address 0042456d (EcDSDNFromSz).

CAUSE

Using the Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 client to modify rules or to import rules into a mailbox that is located on a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computer can cause a server-side rule with a malformed property. The execution of rules in this condition may cause the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service to unexpectedly stop responding.
