If Both Versions of Windows Are on the Same Partition

If both versions of Windows are on the same partition (with the same drive letter), you are running both operating systems in a configuration that is not supported. Windows may be irregular. You must reinstall the operating systems on separate partitions.

If Each Version of Windows Is on a Separate Partition, and FAT16 Is Used for Both Partitions

To install Office if each version of Windows is on a separate partition and FAT16 is used for both partitions, follow these steps:

1. Start Windows (either version), click Start, click Run, type one of the following commands in the Open box, and then click OK to install Office:
   • Setup.exe LOCALCACHEDRIVE=a drive letter
     

This command specifies the drive location for the Msocache folder. Make sure that the same drive not be used on each operating system.

1. • Setup.exe CDCACHE=0
     

This command specifies that the local install source feature not be used. Microsoft does not recommend disabling this feature. If this Setup property is used, any subsequent installation activity will require that you provide the installation media.

1. Restart the computer, if prompted by Office Setup, and then start the same version of Windows that you started in step 1.
   

This step permits Office Setup to complete its installation.

1. Start the other version of Windows, and then install Office to the same path as step 1.
   

To do this, run the Setup.exe file on the root of the Office CD.

1. Restart the computer, if prompted by Office Setup, and then start the same version of Windows that you started in step 3.
   

This step permits Office Setup to complete its installation.

If Each Version of Windows Is on a Separate Partition and FAT32 or the NTFS File System Is Used

You must install Office on both partitions if the following condition is true, because each of these partition formats is not compatible with the other:

• One partition is a FAT32 partition and the other partition is NTFS.

To install Office on both partitions, follow these steps:

1. Start Windows (either version), and then install Office to a partition that is supported by that operating system.
2. Restart the computer, if prompted by Office Setup, and then start the same version of Windows that you started in step 1.
   

This step permits Office Setup to complete its installation.

1. Start the other version of Windows, and then install Office to a partition that is supported by that operating system.
2. Restart the computer, if prompted by Office Setup, and then start the same version of Windows that you started in step 3.
   

This step permits Office Setup to complete its installation.

Personalized Settings in Office 2003

When you make changes to options in Office programs, your changes may not be recognized in the other version of Windows and may have to be configured while you are running the program in the other version of Windows.
