"Full-Text Indexing must be enabled to use the CONTAINS() clause in a query" error message when you search the information store in Exchange Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you use a complex Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) query to search the information store in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Error: 80550050: Full-Text Indexing must be enabled to use the CONTAINS() clause in a query.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the query is too complex to be processed by the Query Optimizer of the Exchange OLE DB provider (ExOLEDB).

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
