SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) and then run the Sysprep tool with the -nosidgen command-line switch, the IIS settings and IIS components are missing from the resulting Sysprep image. For example, when you open the Internet Information Services snap-in, the Default Web Site and the Default FTP Site entries that were previously configured on the computer are missing.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because information that is required for Windows to access the IIS metabase is incorrectly deleted when you run Sysprep with the -nosidgen switch. As a result, Windows cannot access the IIS configuration information.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. File Information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

This hotfix contains two packages.

  • The following table lists the file information for the package (PKG50050) that installs the hotfix on the Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer:

Note Because of file dependencies, this update requires Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)..

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually install the IIS components that you want after the Sysprep operations have finished running. To do so:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. In the Components box, click Internet Information Services (IIS) (but do not click to select the check box), and then click Details.
  4. In the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services (IIS) box, click to select the check boxes next to the IIS components that you want to install, and then click OK.
  5. Click Next, and then click Finish.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
