  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you send outgoing e-mail messages from a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox to a recipient whose mailbox is stored on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer in a different site, the e-mail messages are not delivered. You do not receive a non-delivery report (NDR), and you cannot locate the e-mail message in the message transfer agent (MTA) mail queues.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the recipient has an X.400 proxy address that contains incomplete personal attributes. Specifically, this problem occurs when the X.400 proxy address contains personal attributes, such as a specific name or initials, but it does not include a surname. If the surname is missing from the X.400 proxy address where other personal attributes are provided, the X.400 proxy address is not valid. Exchange Server 5.5 cannot process e-mail messages to an address that is not valid. The Exchange Server 5.5 MTA should return the e-mail message to the sender as undeliverable, but it does not.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, make sure that the there is a valid surname in the recipient's X.400 proxy address.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix may enable Exchange Server 5.5 to deliver the e-mail message to the recipient if the recipient is in the same Exchange organization. However, the hotfix does not resolve the problem in every case where the recipient's X.400 proxy address is missing personal attributes, such as a surname. This hotfix does enable Exchange Server 5.5 to generate an NDR if the e-mail message cannot be delivered within the organization, or if the recipient is outside the Exchange organization. We recommend that you correct the X.400 proxy address for each user who has personal attributes that are incomplete.
