SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Server Message Transfer Agent (MTA) may experience content conversion failures on certain e-mail messages. Event ID 210 messages that are similar to the following are logged in the application log of Event Viewer: Event ID: 210
Source: MSExchangeMTA
Type: Warning
Description:
An internal MTA error occurred. Content conversion for message message failed.

When this event is logged, the e-mail messages do not reach their destination. Additionally, non-delivery reports (NDR) that are similar to the following are received by the sender of the e-mail messages:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

UserName on Date and Time
A syntax error was detected in the content of the message
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a=xyz;l=SERVER1-030403142356Z-6678
MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:Site:Server

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the messages contain Microsoft Database Format (MDBEF) encoding that is incorrectly formatted. The MDBEF encoding contains MAPI properties that do not belong to certain contexts. This problem may occur if either one of the following conditions is true:

  • The MDBEF encoding contains the PR_NORMALIZED_SUBJECT MAPI property in a recipient context.
  • The MDBEF encoding contains the PR_EMAIL_ADDRESS MAPI property in a non-recipient context.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

This hotfix requires Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.
