SYMPTOMS

You can configure Office XP to not allow a user to create an organization chart in the new Organization Chart format. This may be useful if you have to use earlier versions of Microsoft Office to edit the organizational charts.

Hotfix Information

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office XP service pack that contains this fix.

When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To disable the ability to create organization charts natively in an Office XP program, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start , and then click Run .
  2. In the Open box, type regedit to start Registry Editor.
  3. Locate and select the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key .
  5. In the New Key #1 box, type OrgChart, and then press ENTER.
  6. With the OrgChart key selected, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value .
  7. In the New Value #1 box, type RestoreOrgChart2, and then press ENTER.
  8. With RestoreOrgChart2 selected, click Modify on the Edit menu.
  9. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal , type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    The RestoreOrgChart2 entry should now look similar to the following example:

    RestoreOrgChart2 REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
  10. Quit Registry Editor.

If you choose not to create new organizational charts in Office XP format, you may also want to prevent Office XP from converting existing Microsoft OrgChart objects.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
