Outlook 2002 does not respond, and you experience a 4-second to 5-second delay

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002 Service Pack 2, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows XP Embedded



SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Microsoft Outlook 2002, some of the following conditions may occur:

  • You may experience a 4-second to 5-second delay in Microsoft Outlook while Outlook appears to stop responding.
  • New outgoing messages may be stuck in your Outbox.
  • New incoming messages may not be delivered to your Inbox.


CAUSE

This behavior may occur when all the following conditions are true:

  • You install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1).
  • You install Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).
  • You configure Microsoft Outlook with a Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox.
  • You turn on Instant Messaging in Outlook, but you do not start Windows Messenger.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). For more information about Office XP SP3, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:

  • Click a folder in Microsoft Outlook, and then click your Inbox.
  • Start Windows Messenger.
  • Turn off Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then make sure Instant Messaging is turned off on the Other tab).
