Article ID: 818473

Article Last Modified on 10/25/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

SUMMARY

This article discusses the permissions that you must have to install Microsoft Active Directory Connector (ADC) in Exchange Server 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

You must be a member of the Domain Admins group or a member of the Enterprise Admins group to run ADC Setup and to install ADC in Exchange Server 2003.

Notes

  • If the schema has to be updated, you must also be a member of the Schema Admins group to make changes to the schema of the Microsoft Active Directory directory service.
  • If you already used the /forestprep switch with Exchange Server 2003 Setup, and you run ADC Setup from the same build of Exchange Server 2003, you do not have to be a member of the Schema Admins group to run ADC Setup.
  • If you install ADC to a child domain with an empty root parent, you must run Exchange 2003 Setup with the /schemaonly switch, and you must also be a member of the Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins groups. However, if you have previously updated the forest by running Exchange 2003 Server Setup /ForestPrep, you do not have to run ADC Setup /schemaonly in the root domain. You must still be a member of the Enterprise Admins group and of the Domain Admins group.

When you try to run ADC Setup and you are not a member of the Domain Admins group or of the Enterprise Admins group, you receive the following message:

You must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group to run Microsoft Active Directory Connector Setup.

You must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group to run ADC Setup in an environment that has more than one domain in the forest. However, in many situations, you can install ADC even if you are a member of the Domain Admins group.

To install ADC, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Exchange Server 2003 CD-ROM in the computer's CD-ROM drive.
  2. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the Drive:\Adc\I386 folder, where Drive is the drive that contains the Exchange Server 2003 CD-ROM.
  3. Double-click Setup.exe.
  4. After the Active Directory Installation wizard starts, follow the instructions to install ADC.
