SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) to compose and to send a message to a recipient whose name contains one or more colon characters (:), and who does not have a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mail address, you receive the following error message:

Ambiguous Recipients. All addresses must be resolved before this item can be sent. The addresses for the following recipient(s) could not be resolved. Please choose an action for each recipient. If you choose to ignore a recipient, that entry will remain unchanged.

FirstName\\:LastName has no matches.

As a result, you cannot send a message to the recipient by using OWA.

CAUSE

This problem occurs in situations where Exchange Server 5.5 incorrectly resolves recipient names that contain colon characters (:).
