SYMPTOMS

The Sysprep tool does not correctly clean the information in the Protected Storage System Provider key in the registry. This issue may prevent MSN (and potentially other programs) from working correctly because the data that is stored in the Protected Storage System Provider key is not valid after Sysprep is run and the security identifier (SID) is updated. The Protected Storage System Provider key is contained in the following registry location:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\<SID>


RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
