SYMPTOMS
When you link a Group Policy object (GPO) to an organizational unit, the policies in that GPO are not successfully applied to users or computers in that organizational unit.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the organizational unit's name contains an asterisk (*). Windows cannot query an organizational unit whose name contains an asterisk or any child organizational unit that has an upper-level organizational unit whose name contains an asterisk.
RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, move the user(s) or computer(s) to an organizational unit whose name does not contain an asterisk, and then link the GPO to that organizational unit.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
