SYMPTOMS

After you apply Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, custom errors in server-side includes do not work. Instead, you receive a generic "404 Object Not Found" error message.

Note This applies only to custom errors that use the #CONFIG directive to display a custom error message.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows 2000 Service Pack that contains this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

If you continue to experience this problem after you apply the hotfix, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Expand the server you want, right-click the virtual directory or Web site that you want, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Home Directory tab, click Configuration.
  4. Double-click the application mapping for the %SystemRoot%Winnt\System32\Inetsrv\Ssinc.dll executable path, click to select the Check that file exists check box, and then click OK three times.
