SYMPTOMS
You click to select the Smooth edges of screen fonts check box on the Effects tab of the Display Properties dialog box on a Windows 2000-based computer, but you find that the Smooth edges of screen fonts check box is unexpectedly cleared after Group Policy is refreshed.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when Group Policy settings for the user who is currently logged on to the computer is refreshed. This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
- A background refresh of Group Policy settings for the user who is currently logged on to the computer occurs.
-or-
- You run the secedit /refreshpolicy user_policy /enforce command to immediately refresh Group Policy settings.
In this situation, the refresh operation incorrectly clears the Smooth edges of screen fonts check box, if it is selected.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
