SYMPTOMS

If you install Windows XP from an image that was created by using the Sysprep utility, you may experience the following behaviors on the computer:

  • The performance of the computer is slow, or the computer appears to stop responding for 10 minutes to two hours when you restart the computer after completing a mini-setup.
  • In Device Manager, a yellow exclamation point appears next to one or more of the following devices under Sound, video and game controllers:
    • Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller
    • Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
    • Microsoft Kernel Gs wavetable Synthesizer
    • Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Capability Driver
  • The following event ID messages are logged in the System event log:

    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event ID: 7011
    Description:
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the AudioSrv service.

    Event Type: Error

    Description:
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service.

CAUSE

These behaviors occur because the -pnp parameter was used when the Sysprep utility was run on the master computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve these behaviors, do not use the -pnp parameter when you run the Sysprep utility on the master computer. If you have to add drivers that were supplied by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to the Windows Sysprep Setup, configure the OemPnPDriversPath= line in the Sysprep.inf file.
