SYMPTOMS
When you start one of the games listed in the "Applies to" section, the game may stop responding. Additionally, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
The game may start, but the text in the game does not appear correctly.
When you try to play or update Microsoft Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
- When you try to move armies, the game goes back to the worldmap.
- You receive the following message in single-player mode: If you click No, you exit the game.
- When you try to apply the game update, you receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because you must have Microsoft XML 4.0 installed to run these games.
RESOLUTION
Perform a clean boot procedure on the computer
To do this, follow these steps, as appropriate for the operating system that you are running.
Microsoft Windows XP
- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
- On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
- Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process SYSTEM.INI File
- Process WIN.INI File
- Load Startup Items
- On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
- Click OK, and then click Restart.

View the "Run Selective Startup using System Configuration" topic in Windows Help and Support on the computer's hard disk by following these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
- In the Search Help box or in the Search online Help box, type Run Selective Startup using System Configuration, and then click Search Help.
- In the list of topics, click Run Selective Startup using System Configuration.
- Click the link that best describes the problem that you are experiencing.
- Follow the suggestions to troubleshoot the problem that you are experiencing.
Install XML 4.0
To do this, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for the game that you are running.
Microsoft Age of Mythology
- Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert disk 2.
- On a computer that is running Windows Vista, click Start, and then click Computer.
On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
- Right-click the CD drive, and then click Explore.
- In the root folder of the CD, double-click the MSXML folder, and then double-click the Msxmlenu.msi file.
- To complete the installation process, follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Microsoft Age of Mythology: The Titans, Microsoft Age of Mythology: Gold Edition Disc, Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved, or Microsoft Rise of Nations
- Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert disk 1.
- On a Windows Vista-based computer, click Start, and then click Computer.
On a Windows XP-based computer, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
On a Windows 98-based computer or on a Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
- Right-click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Explore.
- In the root folder of the CD-ROM, double-click the Redist folder, and then double-click the Msxmlenu.msi file.
- To complete the installation process, follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Microsoft Freelancer
- Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert disc 1.
- On a Windows Vista-based computer, click Start, and then click Computer.
On a Windows XP-based computer, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
On a Windows 98-based computer or on a Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, right-click My Computer, and then click Open.
- Right-click the CD drive, and then click Explore.
- In the root folder of the CD, double-click the Redist folder, and then double-click the Msxml3.msi file.
- To complete the installation process, follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Microsoft Age of Empires III on a Windows XP-based computer or on a Windows 98-based computer
To install XML 4.0, you must first reinstall Microsoft XML Core services (MSXML). To do this, you must reinstall the game or download and install Microsoft XML Core Services separately. To reinstall the game, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a Program.
- Click Age of Empires III, and then click Change/Remove.
- Follow the steps that appear on the screen to remove Age of Empires III.
- After you have finished uninstalling Age of Empires III, insert Disc 1. Then, follow the steps on the screen to install Age of Empires III.

Age of Empires III on a Windows Vista-based computer
To install XML 4.0, you must first reinstall Microsoft XML Core services (MSXML). To do this, you must reinstall the game or download and install Microsoft XML Core Services separately. To reinstall the game, follow these steps:
- Open Programs and Features.
To do this, click Start, type programs and features in the Start Search box, and then click Programs and Features in the Programs list.
- Click Age of Empires III, and then click Uninstall.
- Follow the steps that appear on the screen to remove Age of Empires III.
- After you have finished uninstalling Age of Empires III, insert Disc 1. Then, follow the steps on the screen to install Age of Empires III.
To download and install Microsoft XML Core Services, follow the instructions in the "More Information" section.
\ Microsoft Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends on a Windows XP-based computer or on a Windows 98-based computer
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a Program.

- Follow the steps that appear on the screen to remove Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends.
- After you finish removing Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, insert Disc 1.

Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends on a Windows Vista-based computer
- Open Programs and Features.
To do this, click Start, type programs and features in the Start Search box, and then click Programs and Features in the Programs list.
- Click Rise of Legends, and then click Uninstall.
- Follow the steps that appear on the screen to remove Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends.
- After you finish removing Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, insert Disc 1.
- Follow the steps that appear on the screen to install Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends.
