SYMPTOMS

When you start the Internet Mail Service in Exchange Server 5.5, the Information Store service crashes. If the Internet Mail Service cannot communicate with the Information Store service, the Internet Mail Service quits.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if there is a corrupted message in the MTS-IN queue. As soon as the Internet Mail Service starts, the Information Store service crashes when it tries to process the message. The corrupted message may be a non-delivery report (NDR) message that has a null value property.

RESOLUTION

Update rollup information

To resolve this problem, obtain the November 2004 update rollup for Exchange Server 5.5.
