Unable to Access WordArt in Publisher

Last reviewed: November 14, 1994

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher version 1.0

SUMMARY

When you receive the error message

Microsoft Publisher is unable to handle a request from the
PageWizard. Something may not be created correctly as a result.

followed by the error message

This PageWizard could not run the WordArt program; and will be
unable to add the WordArt text it needs to.

this indicates that WordArt is not properly installed in the system, it is not being recognized, or that it has been deleted.

This message could occur for several reasons:

WordArt was not installed in the MSAPPS subdirectory because of insufficient disk space, or WordArt has been deleted accidentally.

If this is the case, free some disk space on the disk drive containing the WINDOWS directory and run the Publisher Setup again, selecting the following options:

a. Select Custom Setup.

b. Select to install Program Files only.

The WordArt files were copied incorrectly upon installation.

The WordArt directory should contain the following files:

      WORDART.EXE 37456 9-15-91
      WORDART.HLP 74783 9-15-91
      FONTFX.DLL 42496 9-15-91
      FONTFX.FNT 385536 9-15-91

If file sizes do not match, follow steps a and b above to
reinstall WordArt from the Publisher Setup disks. (Note: It
is possible to have different file dates because WordArt is also
shipped with Word for Windows 2.0, but the file sizes are the same.)

The Registration Database (REG.DAT) has become corrupted.

The Registration Database contains information about the OLE Servers on the system.

To re-create the Registration Database, follow these steps:

a. From the command prompt, change to the WINDOWS directory by

      typing:
      cd\windows

b. Type the following at the command prompt:

         rename reg.dat reg.old

   c. Run Windows and start the Program Manager.

   d. From the File menu, choose Run.

   e. In the Command Line box, type:

         regload mspub.reg
