SUMMARY

When the first paragraph in a document is formatted as a running head (header or footer), the running head text may disappear after toggling from Show Layout to the regular text view.

Because Word does not display running heads in layout mode, Word actually moves the cursor down to the beginning of the first paragraph that isn’t formatted as a running head when you choose Show Layout. As a result, when Show Layout is toggled off, the paragraph below the running head is displayed at the top of the screen.

To view the running head text again, press the UP ARROW key to display the running head above the current cursor position.

Steps to Recreate Problem

  1. Create a new document and type in some text as the running head.
  2. Format the text for a running head (Header/Footer in Word 5.50).
  3. Press ALT+F4 (Word 5.00) or ALT, V, L (Word 5.50) to choose Show Layout.
  4. Toggle Show Layout off by pressing ALT+F4 (Word 5.00) or ALT, V, L (Word 5.50).

The running head will not be displayed. To view the running head, press the UP ARROW key.
