Incorrect Font Mapping Names in Word 5.50 Documentation

PSS ID Number: Q71292 Article last modified on 09-26-1995

5.50 6.00

MS-DOS

Summary:

Documentation errors exist in Appendix C of “Using Microsoft Word” version 5.50 and 6.00 manuals stating that names of font mapping files used in file conversion should include an underscore. These names must actually include a hyphen, and if not, the font mapping file will not be recognized. Affected conversions include the following:

Word <=> DCA-RFT Word <=> RTF RTF <=> Works for DOS

More Information:

For example, if the instructions on pages 654-655 of “Using Microsoft Word” version 6.0 manual or pages 639-640 of “Using Microsoft Word” version 5.50 manual are used to create an RTF font mapping file (RTF_PCW.DAT for conversions from RTF to Word format or PCW_RTF.DAT for conversions from Word to RTF format) and this naming convention is used, the font mapping file will be ignored when the conversion is performed from within Word or from DOS.

The font mapping files should instead be named RTF-PCW.DAT for conversions from RTF to Word format and PCW-RTF.DAT for conversions from Word to RTF format. Simply renaming existing font mapping files with the proper naming convention (AAA-BBB.DAT) will allow the appropriate file converter to recognize and use the font mapping file.
