Workaround

  1. From the Chart menu, choose Attach Text. Select Chart Title.
  2. Press the SPACEBAR, followed by the ENTER key. This creates space for a title even though no title has been entered.
  3. Choose the Select Chart option from the Chart menu so that your chart title is not currently selected.
  4. Type the title that you want to appear on the chart. The title appears in the formula bar.
  5. Press ENTER. The title will appear in the middle of the chart.
  6. Move the title to the desired location by dragging it with your mouse. Or, choose Move from the Format menu and use your arrow keys to move the title to the desired location.

This problem does not occur in later versions of Microsoft Excel.
