SYMPTOMS
When you save a file using the Text Only format from Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.0 and later, any ASCII 11 characters (vertical tab marks or SHIFT+RETURN marks) are replaced with ASCII 13 characters (the paragraph mark).
This behavior can affect files that use the vertical tab feature of FileMaker version 1.0 as a necessary character in a field of a record. In FileMaker, its vertical tab, also known as an ASCII 11 character, signifies a linefeed, but not the end of a record, while ASCII 13 ends the record.
CAUSE
Word uses the ASCII 11 character to denote a non-breaking carriage return. This is a line break that does not break the paragraph formatting. When you save a document that contains these characters in Text Only format, Word converts these characters as well.
