Word: Underlining Inconsistent with Small Caps Format

PSS ID Number: Q59078 Article last modified on 01-16-1998

====================================================================== 3.00 3.01 3.02 4.00 5.00 MACINTOSH kbusage ———————————————————————- The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1 ———————————————————————-

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, when the small caps and underline character formats are used together in a line of text, the large capital letters may have an underline thicker than that of the small capital letters. This problem is most noticeable when printing to a laser printer using a large font size.

CAUSE

When the underline format is used, Word makes a system call to get the font code for the underline definition of the font stored with each font. The small caps format is the current font two points smaller and in capital letters. Therefore, the underlining characteristics differ by two points.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for the Macintosh versions 3.x, 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1. This problem was corrected in Word for the Macintosh version 6.0.

WORKAROUND

The following are two suggested workarounds:

Method 1: Use the formula “..(text)” (without the quotation marks, and where . is COMMAND+OPTION+) in place of the underline formatting. This is the box formula with only the bottom of the box showing. The formula underlines the text; however, it adds some blank space above and below the line. This can be compensated for by changing the line spacing in the Paragraph dialog box to an absolute negative) number.

Method 2: Use the formula “.(text,..(______))” (without the quotation marks). This formula subscripts an overstrike by the number of points you specify and alleviates the problem of having extra space above or below the line. In this formula, however, you need to enter the underline characters into the formula.
