SUMMARY

When printing to an IBM Personal Pageprinter 4216-31 with the IBMPP-30.PRD printer driver, the first print job of a session may not print while all subsequent jobs print correctly. This problem occurs when IBM’s EMMDSWP.SYS (loaded from CONFIG.SYS) and EMMDSW.COM (loaded from AUTOEXEC.BAT) utilities are resident in memory. Removing the programs from memory will eliminate the problem.

These files are used to enable auto-emulation by the IBM Pageprinter 4216-31 by redirecting output sent to LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3 to the port that the printer is actually connected to. Along with the redirected output, the program also sends a code to change the emulation mode of the printer. This emulation code is dependent upon the port that the output was originally sent to.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
