SUMMARY

In Word Version 5.00, bookmark cross-referencing can be used to create running heads that print page numbers as “Page 1 of 3”, “Page 2 of 3”, etc.

MORE INFORMATION

The following steps illustrate how this running head can be set up:

  1. Insert a blank line at the end of the document. (If the blank line affects pagination, format it as hidden text using ALT+E, or by setting the Format Character “hidden:” field to Yes.)

  2. Format the line as a bookmark using the Format Bookmark command and use the word “end” as the name. (You can name the bookmark anything as long as that name is used in the following steps.)

  3. At the beginning of the document, type “Page page” (without the quotation marks), press the F3 key, type “of page:end” (without the quotation marks), and press the F3 key again. It will appear as follows:

    Page (page) of (page:end)

  4. Highlight the line and format it as a running head, positioning it as desired.
