The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 4.0 and 5.0

SUMMARY

If a Word document contains multiple sections, the text of a header or footer may not appear at the top or bottom of the page. This situation occurs because headers and footers appear on a particular page based on the first section that occurs on that page.

For example, in a one-page document with three sections, Word uses the header (or footer) associated with the first section only.

MORE INFORMATION

To work around this problem in a multiple-page document, do the following:

  1. Place the insertion point in the section following the pages that already contain the header/footer.
  2. From the View menu, choose Header or Footer. (In Word 4.0, from the Document menu, choose Open Header or Open Footer.)
  3. Choose the Same As Previous button.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for each section.

To correct this problem in a single-page document, do the following:

  1. Place the insertion point in the section that contains the missing header/footer text.
  2. In normal view, choose Header or Footer from the View menu. (In Word 4.0, in galley view, choose Open Header or Open Footer from the Document menu.)
  3. Select the text in the header/footer.
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Cut.
  5. Place the insertion point in the first section of the document and open the header/footer by choosing Header or Footer from the View menu. (In Word 4.0, from the Document menu, choose Open Header or Open Footer.)
  6. From the Edit menu, choose Paste. The header/footer information should now appear in page layout view (page view in Word 4.0) and print preview.

For more information about section formatting, see pages 562-563 of the version 5.0 “Microsoft Word User’s Guide” or page 321 of the version 4.0 “Reference to Microsoft Word” manual.
