Corrupted Files Occur When Saving to a Network Drive

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

Files can become corrupted on a network running Word 5.00 if the memory addresses of the network card and the expanded memory manager overlap. These corrupted files often give the message “Insufficient Memory” and do not load.

To prevent files from becoming corrupted, do one of the following:

  1. Change the address locations of the expanded memory manager or the network card.
  2. Disable expanded memory from Word by starting Word with the /X, that is, Word /X.

Changing the address is the preferred method of the two choices because other programs using expanded memory will most likely have similar conflicts.

To correct a file that is already corrupted, type the following at the DOS prompt:

COPY CON+FILE1.DOC file2.doc

FILE1.DOC is the name of the corrupted file and FILE2 is the name of the clean file you are going to copy to.

When DOS prompts for input from the keyboard, press the SPACEBAR eight times in a row, press the F6 key once, and then press ENTER. FILE2.DOC should now be available to attempt to load into Word.

MORE INFORMATION

Expanded memory/network conflicts occur primarily because of the differences in how network cards and memory boards address locations in the computer’s memory. The expanded memory manager is generally loaded through the CONFIG.SYS and takes over an area of memory (64K minimum) between C000H:0000 & E000H:FFFF. This address range is also reserved for network cards, XT hard disk controllers, and ROM memory expansion. Because network cards don’t access the memory window until the network software is activated, memory conflicts may not appear in an application using expanded memory until the network is activated.
