SUMMARY

If the error message “Not a Word Stylesheet” is displayed each time Word is started, the default style sheet, NORMAL.STY may be corrupt. If the message displays only when a certain document is loaded, that specific document probably has a damaged style sheet attached. To check for this, do the following:

  1. Choose the Format Stylesheet Attach command to identify the directory location of NORMAL.STY or the style sheet attached to the document.

In Word version 5.50, use the Format Attach Style Sheet command.

  2. At the DOS prompt, use the DIR command to show a listing of the files in the directory where NORMAL.STY or the attached style sheet is located.

  3. Check the file size of the style sheet. It should be more than 512 bytes in size. If it is less than 512 bytes, it is definitely corrupted and should be deleted from the directory.

You cannot recover a corrupted style sheet; it should be deleted and a new one created.
