The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works for MS-DOS, versions 1.x, 2.0 and 3.0

SYMPTOMS

If you connect to the Dow Jones News Retrieval Service using any version of Microsoft Works, you won’t be able enter anything at the prompt if you have chosen Xon/Xoff as your Handshake field setting in the Option Communications dialog box.

CAUSE

Because Dow Jones News Retrieval uses an Xoff (transmit off) character as its prompt character, if you have chosen Xon/Xoff handshaking within the Works Communication program, the program won’t not allow you to transmit keyboard input to Dow Jones until Works receives an Xon character. This will never happen.

WORKAROUND

Therefore, you must choose None in the Handshake field of the Options Communications dialog box within Works when communicating with Dow Jones News Retrieval.
