MS-DOS

SUMMARY

The Word version 5.0 Library Autosort function will not sort if the following conditions exist:

  • NORMAL.STY is read-only and not attached to the document.
  • NORMAL.STY is read-only and a different style sheet is attached to the document.

There may be several copies of NORMAL.STY on the system, with the order of precedence for attaching NORMAL.STY as follows:

  1. The directory set with Transfer Options on start-up of Word
  2. The directory that the MSWNET variable is pointing to (network only)
  3. The Word program directory

When Word is started, enter the Format Stylesheet Attach command and check the path for the NORMAL.STY that is attached by default. If this copy of NORMAL.STY is set to read-only and not attached to a document, or if NORMAL.STY is read-only and a different style sheet is attached to a document, executing the Library Autosort command will result in the error message “Style Sheet is Read-only,” and the sort will not occur.

If NORMAL.STY is read-only and attached to the document, the sort will execute correctly.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.5.

Utilities Sort operates correctly if NORMAL.STY is read-only and is not attached to the document.
