SUMMARY

Microsoft Basic Professional Development System (PDS) versions 7.0 and 7.1 have not been fully tested under and are not guaranteed to run under any version of Novell NetWare. Below are some confirmed and unconfirmed cases of problems using Basic PDS versions 7.0 and 7.1 programs with Novell NetWare.

Also, a customer has reported a problem using Basic 7.0 or 7.1 with 10-Net, a network sold by Digital Communications Associates (DCA). The customer could not open a Basic 7.0 or 7.1 ISAM database on a network drive; the error message "File already open" was returned. Microsoft has not confirmed this report.

MORE INFORMATION

Confirmed QBX.EXE Hanging Report

  • Microsoft Technical Support performed one test that showed that the QBX.EXE editor may hang under Novell Advanced NetWare version 2.15 revision C. This test was performed on an IBM AT with a 16-bit Ungermann Bass network card. The test was run on a nondedicated Novell server. The QBX.EXE editor screen comes up, but at this point, the machine hangs and requires a cold reboot.

This information applies to the QBX.EXE editor that comes with Microsoft Basic PDS version 7.0 for MS-DOS.

Unconfirmed QBX.EXE Hanging Reports

  • A customer reported that the QBX.EXE editor can hang under the following configuration:

COMPAQ 386/20 or ALR 386/33 computer
    Version 2.15 Novell Advanced NetWare
    Micom Interland board NI52100TP-8
    Microsoft Mouse driver version 7.0

When the customer booted without the Novell drivers, or with the Novell drivers and without the Microsoft Mouse 7.0 driver, QBX.EXE worked correctly without hanging. Microsoft has not confirmed this information.
  • A customer reported that the QBX.EXE editor can hang under the following configuration:

    IBM PS/2 Model 50z computer
Version 2.15 revision C Novell SFT network

  • A customer reported that if both EMM386 and the version 2.2 Novell Netware were installed, the QBX.EXE editor hangs when you try to enter a second time and you are using the following configuration:

    AST 386SX computer
    Tiara LandCard
    Version 2.2 Novell NetWare
    EMM386

When the customer removed either EMM386 or the Novell Netware, the QBX.EXE environment worked correctly.
  • A customer reported that a Basic PDS 7.0 program using the OPEN COM statement may hang on a workstation connected to Novell Advanced NetWare version 2.15 revision A. When a Quarterdeck QEMM version 5.0 expanded memory driver was installed, the machine did not hang, but instead, QEMM returned an "Exception 12" error. When the software for the Novell network was removed, the computer did not hang, nor did it generate an Exception 12 error with the QEMM driver loaded. Microsoft has not confirmed this problem. The customer reported the problem on the following configuration:

    Dell System 310
Novell Advanced NetWare version 2.15 revision A
    MS-DOS version 3.3
    80387 math coprocessor
    4 MB extended memory
    Video Seven VGA video card
Phoenix 80386 ROM BIOS Plus version 1.1 A05
Western Digital EtherCard Plus 16, or 3Com EtherLink card

  • A customer reported an "Exception 12" error message after typing QBX at the command prompt when running the following software

    QEMM 6.0
    Novell Advanced Netware version 2.15

    on the following hardware:

    DTK keen-3332
    80386 33 MHz
    No math coprocessor
    8 MB extended memory
    DTR 386 ROM BIOS 4.26
    Networth EtherNext 16bit

No error occurred when the machine was booted with a system disk.
  • When Novell version 2.12 Advanced NetWare was loaded, one customer's computer hung when a Basic PDS program reached an OPEN COM statement to access the serial communications (COM1 or COM2) port. The program worked correctly when the Novell NetWare was not loaded. The customer was using MS-DOS 5.0 and a generic communications card on a Gateway 2000 386/25 MHz PC.
  • A customer reported that the QBX.EXE editor hangs on the following configuration (customer did not test same program run from .EXE):
