The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works for MS-DOS, versions 2.0 and 3.0

SUMMARY

When you run CHKDSK from the Run Other Programs menu, versions 2.0 and 3.0 of Microsoft Works for MS-DOS reallocate memory currently used by inactive program and data code as free memory. Therefore, the memory that CHKDSK reports as free is not the same as the amount of memory free while Works is running.

MORE INFORMATION

When you shell from Works to MS-DOS with the Run Other Programs command, Works determines what program and data code is not currently being accessed and then reallocates the associated memory segments as free memory. However, when you return to Works from the MS-DOS, Works reloads these program and data code segments from disk, and the amount of free memory is again reduced. Therefore, you may receive an “Out of memory” error in Works, run CHKDSK in the MS-DOS shell, and then see memory available.
