- Microsoft MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions, version 2.1

SUMMARY

This article describes the /S switch of Microsoft MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX).

MORE INFORMATION

The /S switch allows discs to be shared over MS-NET networks by causing MSCDEX to patch the running copy of MS-DOS to work on a server.

You must run MSCDEX before you start the network server (NET START SERVER); that is, MSCDEX must have been run first with the /S switch to patch the in- memory copy of MS-DOS before the network server software is run (before the server begins interacting with MS-DOS). This does not cause conflicts with the network redirector because the redirector is not running when the server is running.

NOTE: You can use /S on systems that are not running as servers. This switch affects only the code in the in-memory copy of MS-DOS that is called by the server (that is, the memory is not called if no server is running).

Other than not being necessary, the only other disadvantage to specifying this switch when there is no network installed is that it takes up more code space (that is, more conventional memory).
