File Transfer Methods

  1. Connect the Macintosh directly to an IBM PC with a null-modem cable. To do this, use the proper cabling pin-outs between the two machines. This information should be published in the reference manual supplied with the computer, or may be purchased at most computer dealers or computer book stores. Once connected correctly, the file may be transferred using a communications package, such as Microsoft Works.

  2. Send the file over telephone lines using a modem. To do this, each machine must have an operating modem. Works’ Communications module can be used.

  3. MS-DOS files can be saved directly to a disk drive that reads MS-DOS formatted disks and hooks directly to a Macintosh SCSI port. Two such disk drives are the DaynaFile from Dayna Communications and the MatchMaker from Micro Solutions. Dayna Communications can be reached at (801) 531-0600, and Micro Solutions can be reached at

    1. 756-3411.
  4. With a special card installed inside the DOS machine, files may be transferred by means of a network. This card allows the PC to connect to an AppleTalk network. Software such as TOPS or Microsoft Mail will also be necessary to complete the transfer.

  5. Many Macintoshes have built-in DOS disk drives. DOS formatted 3.5-inch disks can be inserted in these drives and can be read directly by the Macintosh. See your Macintosh owner’s manual for more information.

If the Works for the Macintosh document is saved as an export file and imported into Word for DOS, none of the formatting will be retained. When the document is saved as an export document with the Rich Text Format option, the document will retain most of its formatting when opened in Word for DOS. Word for DOS 5.00 is the first version that supports RTF. When opening Works 2.00 documents in Word 5.00, the program will require the file RTF_DOS.EXE to accomplish the RTF conversion. This file is included in the Word for DOS 5.00 package on the Utilities 3 disk in the 5.25-inch disk package or on the Utilities Flash Printers disk in the 3.5-inch disk package. If Word cannot find this file, the program will prompt you to provide its location.

For more information on opening RTF files in Word for DOS 5.00, see Chapter 13 of the “Using Microsoft Word” version 5.0 manual.
