Summary:

To transfer MacWrite version 4.5 documents to Microsoft Word version 3.0x or 4.0, do the following:

1. In MacWrite 4.5, from the File menu, choose Save As.
2. Type in a new name and click Save.
3. In Microsoft Word, from the File menu, choose Open. Locate and double-click the MacWrite file.
4. Word displays a message saying that it is converting from MacWrite and that it will display the converted text in an untitled document.

Note: When converting a MacWrite document into Microsoft Word, the margins will be translated as follows:

The left, right, and first-line indents in Word will be calculated from the margins as noted above and the indentation settings on the rulers in MacWrite will be calculated so that the text is positioned horizontally at the same place on the printed page as it was in MacWrite.

This conversion procedure is needed because of differences in the way margins are handled in the two programs. In Microsoft Word, all margin settings are controlled using the Page Setup command and apply to the entire document. In MacWrite, the Page Setup command does not handle margins.

There is no direct setting for top and bottom margins in MacWrite. However, the effect of varying the top and bottom margins for the entire document can be attained by entering blank lines (and/or text) in the header and/or footer windows in MacWrite.

All other formats are transferred.

To transfer Word 3.0x and 4.0 documents to MacWrite version 4.5, do the following:

1. In Microsoft Word, from the File menu, choose Save As.
2. Click the File Format button, select MacWrite format, and click OK.
3. Type in a new name and click Save.
4. In MacWrite, choose Open from the File menu.
5. Locate the file and double-click it.

Note: The following Word formatting is lost when a document is transferred to MacWrite:

1. Color.
2. Absolute positioning of objects.
3. Tables.
4. Hidden text (PostScript) is converted to normal text.
5. All underline formats do not convert to standard underline.
6. Strikethrough and small caps convert as plain text.
7. Multiple headers and footers.
8. Footnotes.
9. Outlines.
10. Paragraph borders.
11. Side-by-side paragraphs and other paragraph formatting.
12. Compressed and expanded text is converted to plain text.
13. Section breaks are converted to page breaks.
14. Columns do not transfer.
15. If a document contains a graphic and is saved in MacWrite file format, the paragraph following the graphic does not retain the tab settings or indents set for that paragraph.
16. Date, time, and page number stamps from the header or footer window are converted to “#d”, “#t”, and “#p”, respectively (without the quotation marks). These characters, which are not the same as the actual corresponding entries in MacWrite, are inserted so that you can manually update the document to include these stamps in MacWrite.
17. Only the first 10 tab settings are saved. If you did not manually set any tab stops, then the first 10 default tab stops are saved. This problem occurs because MacWrite allows a maximum of 10 tabs.
