  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0 , 3.01, 3.02, 4.0 5.0 ———————————————————————-

SUMMARY

In versions 5.0 and earlier of Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, to keep bold text at the same character width as plain text do the following:

  1. Select the bold text you want to change.
  2. From the Format menu, choose Character.
  3. Under Spacing, select Condensed, and type 1.5pt in the By box. This decreases the spacing between characters by 1.5 points.
  4. Click the OK button.

This procedure returns the spacing to the plain text width while retaining the bold attribute.

Note: This procedure works best with 10- and 12-point fonts.

MORE INFORMATION

The above procedure has been tested with both proportional and monospace fonts, including Helvetica, Times, Monaco, and Courier.

Note: After following the above procedure, the bold character width of some fonts may not be exactly the same as the plain text character width of the same font. However, the differences will be minute.
