Summary:
Microsoft Word for Windows conversion DLL files are automatically added to the [Microsoft Word] section of the WIN.INI file if they exist in the Word for Windows directory but have not previously been installed, and you choose to open from, or save in, a format other than Word for Windows Normal file format. Therefore, to manually install a text converter not installed during the original Word for Windows Setup, choose one of the methods below:
Note: In Word for Windows version 2.0, converters are only automatically installed if they have not been previously installed, and you choose to open from, or save in, a format other than Word for Windows Normal file format. Word for Windows no longer searches for new converters when opening files from foreign formats.
Rerun Setup
Rerun Word for Windows Setup, and choose to install Word in the same directory. When asked if you wish to copy over files that have already been installed, choose not to. Setup does not overwrite your existing installation, but it provides you the option to install additional converter files.
Note: Setup does not provide the option to remove converter files that have already been installed.
Manual Installation
Manually decompress the text converter you want to add from the Word for Windows 1.x Conversions disk using the supplied DECOMP.EXE utility. For example, to decompress the WordPerfect 5.0/5.1 converter, CONV-WP5.DL$, insert the Word for Windows Conversions disk in your floppy drive, make that floppy drive current, and enter the following command:
DECOMP CONV-WP5.DL$ C:-WP5.DLL
The converter is decompressed and copied to the directory location you specify.
Start Word for Windows.
From the File menu, choose Open, select a file of a format other that Word for Windows format (for example, your CONFIG.SYS file), and choose the OK button.
This procedure causes Word for Windows version 1.x to scan the directory where the WINWORD.EXE file is located for converter DLLs and automatically install any converter DLL found that does not already have an entry in WIN.INI.
Note: Neither the location of WIN.INI or the location of WINWORD.EXE need be in the MS-DOS path for converters to be successfully auto- installed outside of Setup.
More Information:
Word for Windows scans its subdirectory for conversion DLLs, and checks to see whether or not they are listed in the WIN.INI file under the [Microsoft Word] section. If they are not listed, Word for Windows adds them automatically. For example, to see a demonstration of the Word for Windows auto-installation functionality, follow these steps:
- Delete the conversion filters listed in the WIN.INI file under the [Microsoft Word] section.
- Set the “CONVNUM=” line to “0.”
- Save the modified WIN.INI file and exit Windows.
- Restart Windows, and run Word for Windows.
- Open the WIN.INI file again and check the [Microsoft Word] section.
If all the supplied conversion DLL files have been copied to the Word for Windows Program directory, the [Microsoft Word] section of WIN.INI appears as follows:

The “CONVNUM=” statement must be equal to the number of conversions you have declared in this section. The “Conversion=Yes” statement tells Word for Windows to try to convert files that are not in the default Word for Windows format, instead of assuming that the files are to be imported as unformatted text.
