File: Transferring to and from 4th Dimension

Summary:

To transfer files from 4th Dimension version 1.06 to Microsoft File version 2.00, do the following:

  1. Open the file in 4th Dimension.
  2. From the Environment menu, choose User.
  3. From the File menu, choose Export.
  4. Click Text, and set End Of Field to 9 and End Of Record to 13.
  5. Save the file.
  6. Open File and prepare a form to receive the information.
  7. Hide the form (click on the data file window in the background), and choose Open Datafile from the File menu.
  8. From the File menu, choose Open, and locate and open the 4th Dimension text file.

To transfer a file from File 2.00 to 4th Dimension 1.06, do the following:

  1. Open the data file in File.
  2. From the Organize menu, choose List Helper (save the form when prompted to do so).
  3. Hide the form if it is showing (click on the data file window in the background).
  4. From the File menu, choose Save Records As. Click the Text button and save the file under a new name.
  5. Open 4th Dimension.
  6. Open a layout or create a new one. Note that the layout will determine the order in which the records are imported (just as the form does in File).
  7. From the Environment menu, choose User.
  8. From the File menu, choose Import.
  9. Click the Text button and open the data file.
