Word 5.0: First Two Lines Combined in Text File

PSS ID Number: Q51855 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

5.00

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

Saving a file in ASCII text format with line breaks by selecting Text-only-with-line-breaks in the Transfer Save “format:” field when the top margin has a value between .5 inches and 1 inch results in the first two lines of text combining into one line in Microsoft Word version 5.0.

You can work around this problem by changing the top margin to .5 inches or less, or 1 inch or greater.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a sample file that is at least two lines long, as follows:

first line <ENTER> second line <ENTER>

  2. Change the top margin to a number between .5 inches and 1 inch.

  3. Save the file by selecting Text-only-with-line-breaks in the Transfer Save “format:” field.

  4. Notice that the carriage return after the first line is removed and the two lines are now combined into one, as in the following:

    first line second line <ENTER>

  5. Any top margin that is .5 inches or less, or 1 inch or greater does not show this behavior.
