The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works versions 1.x, 2.0, 3.0 for MS-DOS
  • Microsoft Works version 3.0 for Windows
  • == Microsoft Works versions 4.0, 4.5, 4.5a for Windows 95 ==

SUMMARY

It is possible to configure Works to allow direct command of a modem. First, there must be no phone number entered. In Works for Windows, make sure no phone number is entered in the Easy Connect dialog box under the Phone menu, then, click on OK.

In Works for MS-DOS, this is in the Phone menu under the Options menu, then under the Connect menu, the Connect command must be chosen. At this point, modem commands can be entered directly from the terminal screen.

Use the following procedure to test the modem connection:

  1. Type “AT” (without the quotation marks) from the terminal screen to send the Attention command to the modem. If the modem is operational and correctly connected, it will respond with “OK”.
  2. At this point, it is also possible to enter “ATDT”, followed by a phone number to dial, then ENTER. This will command the modem to dial the number specified.

MORE INFORMATION

It is also possible to perform a very simple test from DOS. If the modem has an internal speaker, it is possible to type the following command line (assuming the modem is on COM1:):

COPY CON COM1: ATM2 ATDT 555<ENTER> ^Z<ENTER>

NOTE: ^Z is achieved by pressing CTRL+Z.

This will send the command to dial the number 555 to the port. If the modem is properly configured, three tones will be heard over the speaker. The ATM2 command turns on the modem speaker.
