The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

In Word version 4.00, the error message “The paragraph before the selection should identify the application and be formatted as hidden” indicates that Word cannot identify the source application for the selection being Paste Linked. The identifier paragraph should precede the selection and must be formatted as hidden text. Missing characters that might have accidentally been deleted will also cause this error.

If the identifier paragraph is typed instead of using Paste Link to insert it automatically, there should be no typing mistakes or missing characters in the identifier paragraph. Also, the identifier paragraph must contain all of the information required to identify the source application, the file, and if necessary, the area of the file inserted into Word.

For a complete list of possible error messages while using the Link commands, refer to the “Reference to Microsoft Word” manual, Appendix C, pages 412-414.
