SUMMARY

Word for the Macintosh provides you with three types of hyphens: a normal hyphen, a nonbreaking hyphen, and an optional hyphen.

MORE INFORMATION

Below are instructions on how to create each of these hyphens and briefly describes their functions:

Normal Hyphen

To create this hyphen, press the HYPHEN key on the main keyboard. Use this hyphen when you want the hyphen to always appear in a word.

Nonbreaking Hyphen

In Word 6.0 and later, you can insert a nonbreaking hyphen by pressing COMMAND+SHIFT+-. In Word 5.1 and earlier, press COMMAND+TILDE (~).

This hyphen is used to keep a hyphenated word on one line. For example, a nonbreaking hyphen could be used in a telephone number so that the number will always be on one line.

Optional Hyphen

To create this hyphen, type COMMAND+HYPHEN. This character is invisible unless it appears at a line break -- Word breaks the word where the hyphen occurs and puts the rest of the word on the next line. These hyphens are visible if you show nonprinting characters, such as paragraph marks.
