- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word for the Macintosh version 4.0 may hang when doing a print merge if one of the field names is a reserved word and the merge is sent to the printer instead of a new document.

For example, if “data entrydate” is used as a field name, Word will give the error message “Field name may not be a reserved word,” and highlight the entire header record of the data document. When the OK button is clicked in the dialog box, a hang may occur.

The error message occurs because a field name or a word of a field name cannot be a control word that Word uses as a print merge command (for example, IF, DATA, ELSE, ENDIF, ASK, INCLUDE, SET).

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 4.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.0.
