Worksheet Data Overwritten by Footer/Header in Excel

Last reviewed: October 31, 1994
Article ID: Q51381

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.01, 2.1, 3.0, 4.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2, versions 2.2, 2.21, and 3.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, if the top and bottom margins for a document are set to less than .75 inch, the header and footer of the document may overwrite data within the document itself.

MORE INFORMATION

Excel uses a fixed location to print the header and footer lines regardless of the current top and bottom margin values. When the top and bottom margins are set to values between 0 and .75 inch, then lines of the worksheet will be overwritten.

The workaround at this time is to reset the top and bottom margins to values larger than .75 inch or choose File Page Setup and delete the header and footer lines.

NOTE: This problem does not occur in later versions of Microsoft Excel.
